a work in (slow) progress

glacial movements, rapid fire, & folding clothes

Top Story - March 2026
rainy evening shadow / wurundjeri country / naarm (2025). photo by me.

i move at a glacial pace

how to explain the fuzz

in my head

the sifting through the thoughts

to figure out which ones

are clear

or fair

or rooted in reality

and which ones are felt as rejection when

no rejection is there

i move at a glacial pace

how to convey that sometimes

i can grasp at a thought

and it slips away

a beginning and an unformed end

i move at a glacial pace

how to let you know that i form sentences

and paragraphs

and whole conversations

in my mind

that break off like chunks of ice and

drift and

melt away somewhere

between my brain and my mouth

and surrounding all this icy slowness

is fear

and uncertainty

and self-doubt

and self-blame

not-enoughness

and too-muchness

and unworthiness

and kindness

and care

and sadness

and hope

and joy

and despair

and a love that is as boundless as it is slow

my love is glacial and also rapid-fire

it sits quietly and folds clothes

it springs to action in a crisis

it will do anything at any time for those it attaches itself to

with no expectations of the same.

but hope.

plenty of hope

A delightful poem capturing your contrasting thoughts… I love the conclusion. This poem sounds too similar to my mind’s workings..

I, too, am a work in slow progress. Funnily enough, folding clothes is an example of personal activities that bring up all the thoughts you expressed in your poem. I love the repetition of "i move at a glacial pace." This is highly effective and prompted me to read and reread your poem. Beautiful work, Ali; congratulations on your top story ❣

You've really captured what it feels like when your mind won’t quite keep up with itself. Great work.

  • A great poem and even better for ending with hope.

I really enjoyed the contrast between 'glacial movements' and the everyday task of folding clothes. Thanks for sharing!

This is phenomenal. I should say you are phenomenal. Also get out of my head. Lol. I resonate with this a lot. Warring mind I have. I saw this come up but didn't have time to read it until now. And it's a Top Story and deservedly so Congrats!

I empathize with much of this piece, dear ali. What is real? Rejection or acceptance? The self? Ego death? Or is it all FOMO? Ppl with our brain strata’s exist in our mind, and reality is secondary. We learn to project copies of what we see/like/learn, do we even have a personality of our own or is it all manufactured? They’re my constant thoughts. Wondrous poem 🥹.
