### The Beginning of a Crisis
It all began in 2003 when Colton started showing signs of illness. His father, Todd Burpo, recalls the frantic days when Colton began vomiting. Initially, they thought it was a common stomach flu, as the doctor had mentioned a virus going around. However, as days passed, Colton’s condition worsened, prompting a visit to the hospital where doctors discovered that his appendix had burst. An infection was rapidly spreading throughout his body, and the situation became dire. Todd vividly remembers the moment they were separated from the other patients in the hospital hallway and told that Colton needed immediate surgery.
