Beverly Hills Tennis Coach Vanishes After Befriending Homeless Man
An uncanny friendship leads to an unsettling disappearance...

It’s no secret that Beverly Hills is home to one of the wealthiest communities in America, where grand homes and lavish lifestyles define the landscape. Yet beneath this polished image lies a quieter, darker reality. Along these affluent streets, a growing population of unhoused individuals struggles to survive—often unseen and largely unwelcome.
In the winter of 1989, however, one man down on his luck would defy those social boundaries, forming an unexpected bond with a 24 year old resident named Adam Hecht.

As the son of a successful Hollywood producer, Adam had grown up surrounded by privilege. His childhood was defined by sprawling mansions, chance encounters with movie stars, and a life in which nothing was ever out of reach.
Yet despite this charmed upbringing, Adam remained notably grounded. Known for his good manners and humility, he chose a simple path after graduating high school, taking a job as a tennis instructor rather than leaning on his family’s connections.

On the morning of January 10th 1989, Adam and his brother stopped at a restaurant for breakfast. Seated by the window, they had a clear view of the street outside. At some point, a homeless man lingering nearby caught Adam’s attention.
Excusing himself, Adam stepped outside and struck up a conversation with the man, who appeared to be blind in one eye. Inside, his brother Harold watched, puzzled by the interaction. When Adam returned to the table, Harold asked what they had been talking about, but Adam brushed off the question with little explanation.
Later, as they left the restaurant and walked toward Harold’s car, Adam approached the man once more, resuming their conversation as if it had never been interrupted.

The stranger introduced himself as Tony. From that day on, an unlikely friendship began to take shape—one that Adam’s family neither expected nor fully understood. Within just a few weeks of their first meeting, Adam invited Tony to move into his apartment.
The decision left his loved ones baffled. His brother, however, suspected that Adam had grown weary of his “pampered” life and was searching for a deeper sense of purpose. In taking Tony in, perhaps Adam felt he was finally doing something meaningful—offering someone a second chance and a way off the streets.
But this act of compassion would soon take a tragic turn…

Not long after moving into Adam’s apartment, Tony accompanied him to a dinner at his mother Martine’s home. When Adam arrived at her door with a man she didn’t know—clearly down on his luck—Martine was stunned. Later, she would recall the moment:
“I remember thinking, ‘My goodness, that’s unusual.’ But knowing Adam—the kind of person he was—it also made perfect sense. I found myself thinking, ‘How kind of him, to want to help someone like that.’”
Unlike her son however, Martine got bad vibes from his new friend:
“When I saw Tony—the way he spoke, the way he carried himself—and, my God, the smell… it was overwhelming. It was frightening, truly frightening.”

As the evening wore on, Tony’s behavior became increasingly erratic. At one point, he began waving his hands frantically over his plate, as if caught up in some unseen moment. Adam, however, seemed unfazed, eagerly speaking to his mother about his new friend.
Before long, the relationship began to worry those closest to him. His family grew uneasy, sensing that something wasn’t right. Later, his sister Rebecca would describe her concerns:
“At the beginning, Adam was this polished, preppy young professional. He drove a nice car, taught tennis, and had everything going for him. But after he met Tony, something shifted. It was as if he became… almost mystical. I didn’t recognise him anymore.”
With Tony as his guide, Adam began frequenting the rougher corners of Los Angeles—areas largely overlooked and inhabited by the city’s homeless community. At times, he would even spend nights on the streets, immersing himself in their world in an effort to better understand their struggles first-hand.

Over time, the 'friendship' became more bizarre with the pair engaging in spiritual rituals created by Tony; one particular one ended with Adam severely burning his hands in what he described as a test of endurance.
Then, around 5 months after meeting Tony, Adam would mysteriously disappear, never to be seen again…

On June 10th 1989, Harold realised he hadn’t heard from his brother in several days. Worried, he went to Adam’s apartment to check on him. When he knocked, the door was answered by Tony.
Harold would later recall the encounter:
"My brother was not there. His car was not there. And I tried to get in; I said, 'where's Adam, where's he gone?' And in his strange way, he wouldn't answer the question."
Adam's mother Martine would also later pay a visit to Adam's apartment and her encounter with Tony would frighten her. She said:
"As I'm walking down the corridor, he's following me and says 'give me a kiss'. He started to put his arms around me and it was the scariest thing".

Fearing for Adam’s safety, his family contacted law enforcement and filed a missing persons report. They also fought to have Tony evicted from the apartment, as it appeared he had taken control of the place in Adam’s absence.
On July 9th, Tony was removed from the home and questioned by police, but he was released without charges.
Tragically, from that point, Adam’s case went cold. There was no evidence of foul play, and authorities believed he had simply chosen to disappear.
Then, a month later, Adam’s car was discovered abandoned on a quiet side street. Police noted it had been there for some time, evidenced by multiple parking tickets. Inside the vehicle, Adam’s keys, wallet, cards, and cash remained untouched—left exactly as if he had vanished without a trace.

For the Beverly Hills Police Department, the discovery seemed to confirm that Adam had willingly abandoned his car and personal belongings, leaving his former life behind. Lieutenant Robert Curtis would later release a statement:

Harold, however, refused to accept this explanation. He insisted that it was completely out of character for his brother to vanish without a word, especially leaving no farewell for his loved ones. Adam had responsibilities and a thriving business—things he would never simply abandon.
Despite Harold’s insistence, the police remained firm: with no evidence of a crime, they saw no reason to treat the case as anything other than a voluntary disappearance.

It has now been 36 years since Adam Hecht was last seen.
For decades, his loved ones have been haunted by unanswered questions: Did Tony play a role in Adam’s disappearance, or did Adam simply turn his back on the comfortable life he had always known, choosing instead to forge his own path from scratch?
If he were alive today, Adam would be 60 years old. His heartbroken mother has since reflected on his absence, saying:
